NSI turns 55 years old

Building a safer world, together

This year marks a significant milestone for the National Security Inspectorate (NSI), we are officially 55 years old!

As we celebrate our 55th year of raising standards, building trust and helping to build a safer world, it’s worth considering how we got here.

Since our founding in 1971, NSI has championied quality, competence and integrity. What began as a commitment to improving standards in one developing industry has grown into a recognised benchmark for excellence, trusted by businesses, public sector organisations and homeowners across both Security and Fire.

A legacy built on trust and standards

Over the past five and a half decades, the world has changed dramatically. Technology has advanced, risks have evolved and expectations around safety, accountability and performance have rightly increased.

Through it all, NSI has remained focused on one core principle: confidence through certification.

By independently assessing companies against rigorous standards, NSI has helped to:

  • Raise the bar for security and fire safety installations and services
  • Provide reassurance to those procuring critical services
  • Support responsible persons and duty holders in making informed decisions
  • Drive continuous improvement across the industry

That commitment has helped shape a landscape where competence can be demonstrated and made visible in the market.

Evolving with a changing world

Reaching 55 years isn’t just a matter of longevity, it is also testament to how relevant NSI has remained to the challenges UK industry faces.

From traditional guarding and alarm systems to today’s integrated, technology-led asolutions, NSI has continually evolved its schemes and approach to reflect the realities of modern risk. In parallel, the need for clear, credible, third-party assurance has never been greater.

As scrutiny increases and expectations rise, the role NSI plays in helping organisations identify trusted providers continues to grow in importance.

Reaching 55 years is a proud milestone for NSI and a testament to the role that high standards and trusted certification play in building a safer world. But safety is not only about systems and services, it is about people. That is why we are proud to support Family Action in our anniversary year. Their work strengthening families and communities reflects the broader impact we all have a responsibility to make.

A shared responsibility for safer communities

While much of NSI’s work focuses on systems, services and standards, our purpose has always been broader around helping build safer communities.

That responsibility does not sit with any one organisation alone. It is shared across industries, sectors and society as a whole. It is also why, in our 55th anniversary year, we are proud to support Family Action as our chosen charity partner.

Supporting safer communities beyond our sector

As NSI marks 55 years of raising standards and helping to build a safer world, we recognise that safety goes beyond systems and buildings, it starts with people.

Family Action shares that belief. For over 150 years, it has provided practical, emotional and financial support to families facing hardship, helping to create stronger, more resilient communities.

Supporting Family Action as our charity partner is a meaningful way to extend our impact beyond our sector and contribute to safer communities across the UK.
