While achieving Gold status provides a clear competitive advantage in a crowded market, our primary motivation is the reassurance it offers our clients. certification provides independent, external clarification that we are delivering a high standard of work. It demonstrates our dedication to professional accountability; by inviting external auditors to verify that our processes and site installations are fully compliant, we prove our commitment to the standards that govern our industry. This reputation for integrity and documented quality has been a cornerstone in Smartec’s growth.

What benefits has NSI certification brought to your business?

NSI certification has brought tangible benefits to our business growth. In many cases, project specifications strictly require BAFE/NSI certified companies to tender. Holding these approvals across design, installation, and maintenance has not only allowed us to win major tenders but also to retain those systems for ongoing maintenance once projects are completed. Furthermore, our recent Evacuation Alert Systems Gold certification has opened doors to specialist works, while our NACOSS Gold status has approved our work in the smart building sector, allowing us to diversify and stay ahead of modern building requirements.

How has NSI certification benefitted your customers?

The most significant benefit for our customers is confidence. Because Smartec is NSI Gold certified, clients have the assurance their systems are being handled by a competent, vetted, and compliant provider. NSI audits are vital to Smartec and the wider industry. They provide the "external sign-off" that reinforces our credibility. The audit process is particularly valuable because it identifies what is working well as well as areas where we can improve. We use this feedback to review our processes, strengthen consistency across the business and maintain a clear focus on compliance with British Standards. Audits also support staff development by helping us identify areas where additional guidance or training may be beneficial. This approach makes the business more robust and efficient, while strengthening the service and assurance we provide to customers.

Looking forward, what do you consider to be the industry’s key challenges and opportunities?

Looking ahead, the demand for integrated smart-building systems presents both an opportunity and a challenge. As construction projects become more complex, we expect intruder and fire systems to follow the lead of VSS and Access Control in terms of technical integration.

Furthermore, the industry faces a significant challenge regarding the availability of qualified, reliable engineers. Ten years ago, fire and security engineers could often work based on practical experience alone; today, recognised Level 3 qualifications are a necessity for gaining access to sites through schemes like the FESS ECS card. This shift is critical for ensuring competence and safety across the industry, but it has contributed to a notable skill shortage. While it is encouraging to see the rise in apprenticeship schemes to develop the next generation, we must ensure these qualifications are backed by genuine field experience.

Finally, Artificial Intelligence is a tool that cannot be ignored. While many companies use AI for basic chat functions, we have developed our own proprietary applications and software to enhance our operational processes and productivity. By integrating these technologies into our day-to-day workings now, we are ensuring Smartec remains a forward-thinking partner in a rapidly evolving market.
