Revision of BAFE Scheme for Contract Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers
The publication of the revised BAFE Scheme follows lengthy consultation with representatives from the industry, certification bodies and other interested stakeholders. NSI was an active participant in the review of the scheme.
According to BAFE “The revised SP101 scheme continues to provide the best assurances to the industry and their customers of what defines a quality provider of fire extinguisher services in today’s market and also updates and strengthens the role of the fire extinguisher technician…”
BAFE PFE Technician Requirement
BAFE add that the competency of a fire extinguisher technician has been enhanced further by including additional technical competence and the added requirements for training in asbestos awareness and health and safety procedures.

Fire Gold and Fire Silver Level
Those working in the portable fire extinguisher sector may be interested to know that from the start of next month, it is no longer an SP101 scheme requirement to operate an ISO 9001 Quality Management System .Consequently, NSI, as a BAFE licenced third party certification body, will offer SP101 approval at Gold and Silver level. Successfully completing the NSI application process will enable applicants to achieve both BAFE registration and NSI approval to our Fire Gold or Fire Silver schemes.

- Fire Detection and Alarm Systems: a modular scheme for design, installation commissioning and maintenance (SP203-1)
- Competency of Portable Fire Extinguisher Organisations and Technicians (SP101)
- Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment (SP205-1)
- Emergency Lighting (SP203-4)
- Fixed Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems (SP203-3)
