At a recent BSIA awards ceremony, the national Apprentice Installer Awards were awarded by the BSIA to four outstanding young apprentices who are employed by NSI approved companies.

Sponsored by Pyronix, the Apprentice Installer Awards recognise the academic and practical achievements of Level Two and Level Three apprentices involved in the installation of alarms, CCTV and access control or a combination of these systems.

Congratulations to the following Winners:

The overall winner is Darrell Gilmour (pictured, left), 19, of Kings Security Systems who is in his third year of studies and was nominated for the award by New College in North Lanarkshire. Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Tony Porter, presented Darrell with his award.

Tom Parker, 19, of VSG received an award for turning his fascination for technology into a career, already having worked on large scale installations and high-profile clients such as Lloyds of London.

Nathan Sefton, 21, of Chubb Fire & Security won his award for demonstrating a sound knowledge of the industry and for this methodical, level-headed approach to problem-solving. Nathan excelled on a large project, where his documentation for over 30 sites was error-free and met strict deadlines.

Aaron Noble of Kings SecuritySystems was selected after being nominated by Mark Cunningham, Assessor, from Skills for Security. Aaron demonstrated an excellent understanding of theory and practical work and a commitment to customer satisfation. A key ambition for Aaron is to be lead engineer by his mid-30s.

Julie Kenny, CBE DL, Chair and Chief Executive of Sponsors, Pyronix, says “As the cost of university education has increased dramatically in the last few years, there has never been a better time for the security industry to appeal to the younger generation who want to work, develop a career and earn money.

100 in 100 Apprenticeship Initiative

NSI supports the 100 in 100 Apprenticeship Initiative which aims to annually place 100 apprentices in jobs in 100 days. Since it began, over 1800 young people have begun their careers in the security and fire sectors in a variety of administrative and technical positions.

Congratulations to Simon Banks, Group Managing Director of CSL DualCom, who won the BSIA’s Chairman’s Award for promoting the industry for his work on the 100 in 100 initiative at last week’s event.

Apprentices can provide real benefits to an organisation and with new technologies coming to the fore, securing the skills base for the future has never been more essential.
