/ Revision of BAFE Scheme for Contract Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers

29 September 2017

The revision of BAFE scheme SP101 – Contract Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers, will come into effect on 1st October 2017 and brings with it the new scheme name: 'Competency of Portable Fire Extinguisher Organisations and Technicians'.  Although not mandatory, the scheme provides a proof of competence regarding the selection of a safe service provider.

The publication of the revised BAFE Scheme follows lengthy consultation with representatives from the industry, certification bodies and other interested stakeholders. NSI was an active participant in the review of the scheme.

According to BAFE “The revised SP101 scheme continues to provide the best assurances to the industry and their customers of what defines a quality provider of fire extinguisher services in today’s market and also updates and strengthens the role of the fire extinguisher technician…”

BAFE add that the competency of a fire extinguisher technician has been enhanced further by including additional technical competence and the added requirements for training in asbestos awareness and health and safety procedures.
